Stuart, FL Ocean Specialists, Inc. (OSI) is pleased to announce the introduction of its patented Portable Dynamic Riser (PDR) technology to the deepwater oil and gas industry. The PDR is a portable, skid-mounted cable package that allows Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) and other mobile assets to establish a connection to an in-field fiber optic network without the need to install a custom?designed dynamic riser. The potential to provide virtually unlimited bandwidth to offshore drilling platforms opens the industry to significant new opportunities to improve the safety, efficiency and quality of its operations by providing real?time access to the industry's most advanced technology, subject matter experts and best practices wherever they may be located world-wide.
The PDR consists of a topside winch and launch frame that lowers a spooled subsea flying lead via a lightweight, reinforced fiber umbilical. The flying lead, consisting of a lightweight fiber tether and fiber optic wet-mateable connector, is flown into place and connected to a nearby drill center or Umbilical Termination Assembly, with an available fiber connection, using a workclass ROV. At the end of the drilling program or service requirement, the flying lead is disconnected, and all subsea components are spooled back on board the skid and made ready for the next deployment. The PDR units will be produced by OSI's development partner, Seanic Ocean Systems, a leading producer of ROV intervention tooling, handling equipment and engineered solutions for the deep water oil and gas industry (www.seanicusa.com).
An increasing number of deepwater field developments are establishing submarine fiber networks as their primary mode of communication, both within the field and to shore. Many operators are also including wet-mateable fiber connectors at their drill centers and other subsea control points to allow for network connection by critical field assets. The low cost and portability of OSI's PDR package allows for mobile subsea fiber connections to be made in a reliable, cost effective and rapidly-deployable manner, even for fields up to 10,000 ft water depth. The industry-standard configuration of the skid-mounted unit will minimize the predeployment engineering requirements, allowing for transfer of the riser package between different platforms, and enabling consistent sparing across the fleet.
Since 2000, Ocean Specialists, Inc. has been a pioneer in the development of undersea fiber optic networks for the offshore oil and gas industry, providing the industry with new technology for the connection and deployment of undersea fiber networks, and supporting the technical and commercial planning and implementation of undersea networks for oil and gas operators worldwide.
